Beyond feeling up or down: Understanding mood and mood disorders

Mood is a complex construct that refers to a person’s emotional state. It is more enduring than emotions or feelings and can significantly influence our perception of the world around us. Various factors, including our physical health, social interactions, environmental conditions and psychological state, can influence mood. When we talk about mood disorders in psychology, we are referring to conditions that affect a person’s emotional state to a degree where it interferes with their daily life.

Bereavement, Grief, and Loss

In the context of working with people living with chronic health conditions and weight concerns, Jane has an understanding that grief and loss not only refer to the loss of a loved one but are also experienced when a person is diagnosed with a significant health condition and experiences a sense of loss associated with any aspect of their social, relational, functional, occupational or personal life. Coping with loss can evoke a multitude of emotions, ranging from profound sadness to anger and guilt. These intense feelings can have a significant impact on one’s overall mood and engagement in lifestyle activities and may potentially lead to prolonged periods of sorrow or even depression.

Emotional Distress/Depression/Anxiety Disorders

Chronic health conditions are often characterised by persistent negative moods. Feelings of sadness or hopelessness mark depression, while anxiety disorders are characterised by excessive worry or fear.

Stress Management

Chronic stress can lead to negative mood states such as irritability or frustration, which, if not appropriately managed, can lead to more serious mental health issues like depression or anxiety disorders.

Diabetes distress or burnout

Living with a chronic condition like diabetes can be overwhelming, leading to feelings of distress or burnout. This can manifest as persistent sadness, frustration, anxiety or anger, affecting one’s mood and engagement in diabetes management.

Phobias

Phobias such as needle phobia can trigger intense fear or anxiety, affecting a person’s mood and ability to function in certain situations. Jane can support client’s with needle phobia to manage their fear with the goal of self-injection.

Distress associated with receiving medical treatment/hospitalisation

The fear and anxiety associated with medical procedures or hospital stays can lead to negative mood states and impact a person’s mental health.
